Facebook. What is there to say? I believe that it has taken the place of Myspace. I never used to be "into" the social networks. It took me about three months before I had decided to make a myspace, but once I had made it...it was already yesterday's news. At first, I REFUSED to make a Facebook. I knew how much time it would take up during my day. But finally, I had surrendered...and I LOVE IT!
Facebook really is an amazing way to stay in touch with friends. Now that I am in college, I use facebook as the core way of communicating with students from high school.
Although I love Facebook, I do think there are drawbacks to it aswell. Facebook has a tendency to take up most of my time on the computer when i should be doing other things such as: studying the cranial nerves, writing an essay in spanish, researching web tools, etc. What is scary is that I can only go on Facebook to check for any new posts, and wind up spending hours upon hours looking through pictures of friends or pictures of friends' of friends.
I personally have nothing to hide on Facebook. Everything that I have on there, I would not be ashamed of my "mother" seeing (as stated in a guide to safety on Facebook). I do not have a problem with teachers being my friends on Facebook. I have actually used Facebook to get in contact with some teachers to ask questions about something taught or said in class.I do think there are some students that might have things to hide, so they would have a problem with a teacher being their friend.
I think Facebook can be safe up to a certain point. People have to be smart when using Facebook. One should NEVER give out any personal information.
Overall, I do think Facebook's advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
